7 Things I like about Japan

After being in Japan for a while and the novelty of being in the land of Hello Kitty and Pocky has worn off, I find many foreigners enter a “Every little thing about this place irritates the crap outta me” phase (The EL-TAT-PIT-COMP if you will). The nasally “Irashaimase” when entering a store, the constant declaration [...]

Japan – First Arrival

I have been in Japan for nearly two years, taken 11 gigabytes worth of pictures, and have actually post about 20 of them on my website. Ah, the diary of a procrastinator. However, I’m a big believer in “Better Late than Never” so starting now I’ll be posting pictures chronicling my time here in Japan. [...]

A daunting task

I recently purchased and put up this poster of the Joyo Kanji, the 1945 Japanese characters for everyday reading, from White Rabbit Press (creators of the best kanji flash cards out there and great source of Japanese texts outside Japan).

I’m not sure if this poster is motivating or depressing. As you can see, [...]

Now that you’re in JET . . .

I figured I’d take a moment from my regular lack-of-focus blogging and congratulate the shortlisters for the 2009 JET Program. One of you lucky kids will be working with me come August, so you better be cool! Or at least tolerable.

Anyway, you’re coming to Japan and I’m sure there are a million things going through [...]

Fun with Tilt-Shift Photography

I found this fun tutorial about tilt-shift photography and thought I’d try it out. What is “tilt-shift photography”, you ask? Basically it makes everyday photos look like miniature scenes. I figured among the hundreds of Japan photo’s I’ve taken, some would make decent “Tilt-shift” photos. Here are some of my more successful attempts. (tutorial is [...]

A word to those reJEcTed

It’s about that time a year when JET applicants learn whether or not they got an interview. I, of course, offer my congratulations to those who made it, but I thought I’d give those of you who didn’t make it past the interview stage this year some words of wisdom or encouragement or at least [...]

Fuji-san

It’s about that time of year where the cold in starting to settle in again and I wake up to a house where the thermostat says “L” as in “too Low to measure.” The only advantage to the cold and wind is this:

Usually in winter I can only see Mt. Fuji in the morning before [...]

Random Japan-ness

Good lord, I’m a procrastinator. I have months of pictures that I want to upload and posts I want to write, but for some reason other things seem to take presidence, like organizing my music, or recently discovering southparkstudios.com and deciding I should watch it from the beginning!

Anyway, here’s a picture from back in May when [...]

Songs of the Month: September Review

Part of the warm-up of nearly every one of my English classes is the song. Each month there’s a new song for the 7th, 8th and 9th graders. Should be fun, right, singing a song every day. Unfortunally, it can be painful. These are kids just learning to speak English, so songs have to have [...]

Today’s Lunch: 9-17

Monday was “Respect for the Aged” day, and Tuesday was a substitute holiday for Sports Day, so I didn’t have school lunch again until Wednesday. Nothing too wacky in this lunch, besides the weird potato chicken stuff.

This lunch gets 4 out of 5 gyoza, yummy, gyoza
